2A Notebook: Week Six

The Class 2A is getting competitive and there are at least four teams in the Midlands who are going to play deep in the playoffs, in my opinion.

  • Brayden Williams

Saluda had a bye this past week and this team is primed for a run in the state 2A playoffs. I don’t think they get a blemish in region play this year with the strength of their offense and the way their defense has played. Freshman running back Breydan Williams has been the force of the ground game and QB Jonah McCary has been more than efficient. This week, they play the toughest team they will face all year in a non region match up with Gilbert at home.

  • WR TyDarion Greir

Fairfield Central got their first region win last week against Keenan and got good play out of their freshman quarterback, Cameron McMillon. Their defense gave up more than I thought they would and that will need to be fixed before facing Gray later in region play. This week, they are  off and prepare for Mid Carolina next week.

  • Riley Staton

Gray Collegiate got their first region win, blowing out Eau Clair in an expected win. QB Riley Staton continuesto air out the ball and put up big numbers for the War Eagles and their defense seems to have arrived here mid way through the season. This week, they face Mid Carolina and it should be a win for the War Eagles.

  • The Pelion Panthers were off this past week and should be rested up for the battle this week against Ninety-Six. They will see the ball in the air a lot in this game so pressure on the quarterback will help the Panthers’ cause. This is not an easy region they are in and this is not an easy region opener.
  • Trey Thompson

Andrew Jackson is the best 2-2 footall team in the Class. This team has played a tough schedule but they are playing very good defense right now and their running back, Trey Thompson, is one of the Midlands’ best. This week they face an unbeated Lewisville team, though the combine record of the Lions’ opponents is 3-19 so they haven’t exactly been tested. I like the Volunteers in this match up.

  • The Panthers of Batesburg-Leesville got a win over Newberry this past week and were able to run the football on the Bulldogs. This week, they Panthers take on Chester in a non-region match up and I’m afraid they are going to be outmatched. The Cyclones are dangerous on offense and have an outstanding quarterback who will air the ball out.
  • QB Hernandez Oneal

Keenan lost a close game in their region pener against Fairfield Central and honestly, this team has enough offense to win games if they can get some support from their defense. They have a region match up against Newberry this week and I believe are in a match up they can win if they can play well on the defensive side of the football.

  • Newberry lost a close game to Batesburg-Leesville this past week and three turnovers in that game cost them. They had over 300 yards of offense, with 146 yards off the arm of QB Bryce Satterwhite but they gave up their 14 point lead went scoreless in the second half, giving up 16 to the Panthers. This week, they take on a Keenan team that is much stronger on offense than the Bulldgos saw last week.
  • Jamel McDaniel

Columbia lost their region opener to Mid Carolina this past week and will take on rival Eau Claire this week. The Shamrocks are coming off a drubbing from Gray Collegiate so both of these teams are looking for their first region win.

  • North Central is 0-5 after getting anhialated against Crestwood this past week. The Knights have very little in the way of offense but they are off this week before facing their first region opponent next week.
