Irmo Head Coach Aaron Brand says that 2022 will be “rebuilding” but they are in the mindset that it is “reloading”. The Yellow Jackets will have eight underclassmen starting for them this season, including two sophomores.
“We will be young until we are not young anymore,” said Brand.
The Yellow Jackets finished 7-4 overall and 4-1 in region play in 2021 and hope to be strong in region play again this season.
Returning to the lineup is five seniors. RB Eric Tucker TE Finn Qualls, and linemen Jaylin Wingard and Omari MIlls come back on offense. Defensively, senior Taevion Brown returns at corner.
Juniors who will fill step into starting roles are LB Xavier Montgomery (6-2,220), OL/DL Bruat Ham (6-2,265), CB Isaiah McClary (6-1,175), WR Telvin Smith (5-10, 175), OL Eljah Williams (6-5, 285) and Kicker Jose Vilanueva.
Sophomores who will step into key starting roles are QB AJ Brand (6-1,185) and WR Terrin Bowman (6-0,165).
“We need to mature quickly,” said Brand, “iif we are going to compete for any kind of playoff run,” said Brand.
The Jackets will open the season at home, hosting the Chapin Eagles.
