- The top team in Midlands 3A is the Gilbert Indians. I said last week the game against Pelion would be a massacre and it was. The Indians scored at will
against the Panthers and there was no answer for the dynamic duo of Alias Graham-Woodberry and Jaden Allen-Hendrix in the backfield. This week, the Indians will face the best team on their schedule in rival Lexington. This is probably the best game match up in the state. Two explosive offenses with strong ground games facing off. This game is going to come down to who plays better defense and controls the line of scrimmage.
-
The Swansea Tigers are 3-1 and got a win over a good 1A Wagener-Salley team last week. I don’t think for a moment that this team is ready to compete for the region crown, but I do have to give them credit for winning what’s on their schedule. This week, they take on CA Johnson and should be favored in that game, though the Hornets will move the ball against them.
- Camden played terrible against Gray Collegiate this
past week against a team who woke up and started playing to their abilities. The past two weeks, I’ve seen a Camden team that I saw in preseason that was inconsistent. I don’t think they are in trouble and will still be a contender when playoffs start but this week they have a huge test as they travel to take on the No. 2 team in the Midlands, 4A AC Flora. The Falcons are dangerous on offense and fast and aggressive on defense.
- The Crestwood Knights lost to cross town rival Sumter this past week and the Gamecocks limited the damage done by quarterback Javion Martin and was able to hold down wide receiver Nigel Johnson. The Knights take on North Central this week and this game should not even be close. Look for Martin and Johnson to have huge games this week.
- The Brookland-Cayce Bearcats lost a shootout to AC Flora this past week,
giving up 72 points to the Falcons. The Bearcats offense looked strong at times and quarterback Tanner Staton had close to 250 yards total offense in the game. Defensively, the Bearcats gave up too many explosive plays. This week, they take on a Chapin team that is struggling on the offensive line. If the Bearcats can get up early on this team, I don’t think the Eagles are capable of exchanging big offensive plays with the Bearcats. But the Bearcats will need to be less chaotic on offense than they usually are.
- The Lakewood Gators continue to struggle on the defensive side of the
football as they dropped their game last week to the Aynor Blue Jackets, giving up 54 points. This week, it gets no easier for the Gators as they face off with 2A Andrew Jackson. The Volunteers are 1-2 but they are the best 1-2 football team in the state. They are strong on defense and have the best running back that Lakewood will see this season.
- Lower Richland sits with all that talent at 1-3. This past week they lost to a
bad Rock Hill team. Nate Branch had 150 yards and 2 touchdowns. Their two biggest weapons touched the ball a total of 12 times and they were down big in the third quarter still running the football. They have to open their offense up some if they are going to beat good football teams. This week, they face a River Bluff team that will not make mistakes and give them opportunities. They will be strong on offense and their defense will shut down a one dimensional game plan.,
-
The Orangeburg-Wilkinson Bruins are battle tested if nothing else. Their 1-3 record includes losses to three unbeaten teams from 5A, 4A and 2A. This week, they will take on a winless Silver Bluff team that has some scary talent on the roster but has not put together a win yet. It’s time for the Bruins to get back in the win column.
- The Dreher Blue Devils are 1-3, also, and lost big to a very good 4A West
Florence team last week. This team is improved from last year, though they have played a couple of tough teams that prevent that improvement from showing up in the scorebox. This week, they face a Ridge View team that has progressively gotten better this season on offense and their defense is very strong. I think the Devils will struggle again this week.
