2A Notebook: Week Five

  • The Saluda Tigers stand as the top team in the Midlands 2A after a come from behind win against Emerald this past Friday. Freshman sensation running back Brayden Williams rushed for 99 yards and quarterback Jonah McCary threw for 100 yards and passed for one touchdown and ran for another. This week, they Tigers are off.
  • Fairfield Central is licking their wounds after back to back losses to Chester
    WR Tydarian Greer

and Lancaster. The Griffins struggled offensively compared to their normal game against a tough Lancaster defense. This week, they take on a Keenan team that will challenge them through the air, but the Griffs should get back on track this week against the Raiders.

  • Gray Collegiate’s defense finally woke up this past week against Camden and DB Justin Pauling picked off three Grayson White passes, returning one for a touchdown to seal the win. The War Eagles are banged up from a tough schedule so far but will face off with Eau Claire this week and should have little trouble disposing of the Shamrocks.
  • Pelion is coming off a drubbing at the hands of rival Gilbert but should take comfort in knowing they won’t see the 3A Indians again this season, nor the likes of them. This week, the Panthers are off before facing off with a good Ninety-Six team in two weeks.
  • Keenan got a win over a bad North Central team this past week behind a 275 yards passing game from quarterback Hernandez Oneal, who threw for 4 touchdowns in the game. This week, they take on a very dangerous Fairfield Central team who will not have as flexible a defense as North Central showed. The Griffins will throw more offense at Keenan than they’ve seen this year.
  • Patrick Swygert

The Panthers of Batesburg-Leesville were off this past week but will take their 1-2 record into a home game with an winless Newberry Bulldogs football team this week. The Bulldogs will who a balanced offense to the Panthers and have a pretty good quarterback. This game is fairly evenly matched and the line of scrimmage will determine the winner.

  • Andrew Jackson is 1-2 but I’ve said it already, they are the best 1-2 football
    RB Trey Thompson

team in the state. They could just as easily be 3-0, playing two very good football teams close with Fairfield Central and Crestwood. This team has one of the best junior running backs in the state in Trey Thompson and their defense is very good, with DB Cullen Ussary leading the Midlands in interceptions (6 in 3 games) and linebacker Fuller Sims one of the Midlands leaders in tackles. This week, they take on a 2-2 Lakewood team that, like the Volunteers, are better than their record would indicate.

  • Newberry is 0-3 but have lost to three very good football teams. Last week, they lost to a 5A  Chapin team that just outmanned them. This week, they match up well against the Panthers of Batesburg-Leesville and will need good play in the trenches to win this game.
  • Mid Carolina got an expected win over Whitmire last week but will face off a Columbia team who got their first win this past week. This is the first region game for both teams and I believe the Rebels have to be the favorite entering this game.
  • The Columbia Caps got a win this past week, nipping Great Falls in a 30-28 game. This week starts region play as the Caps host the Mid Carolina Rebels. Prior to the Great Falls game, the Caps had generated just 12 points of offense this season. They will need to better that to win this week.
  • Eau Claire lost to Whitmire and that is a telling sign for this Shamrock team. The Whitemire Wolverines are not a very good football team and this week, Eau Claire faces a Gray Collegiate team that knocked off 3A Camden last week. This game will not end well for the Shamrocks.
  • North Central Knights lost to Keenan this past week and I feel for this Knights team. They lost their coach to another job days before Fall practice began and have been scrambling since then. They need something good to happen for them but it wont be this week as they face off against an offensively explosive Crestwood Knights team.
