Midlands 2A Notebook Week Nine

QB Riley Staton

The Gray Collegiate War Eagles got a huge win this week over Fairfield-Central and the Griffins were the only real challenge for the Region Crown. Gray got excellent play from junior QB Riley Staton who was 14 of 18 for 145 yards and 1 TD. This week, they host Newberry who is 2-5 overall and struggling on both sides of the football.

Fairfield Central’s Donovan Watkins

Saluda took their first loss of the season this past week against Strom Thurmond and was held to a field goal on offense. They take on Silver Bluff this week and will finish with Fox Creek and Batesburg-Leesville, but that loss to Strom Thurmond will cost them the region crown.

Fairfield Central lost to Gray Collegiate in a game that should produce the region winner. The Griffins got good play on offense but came up short on stopping the War Eagles on offense. The Griffins play Columbia this week in what should be a win for them, but this loss to Gray will cost them the region crown.

RB Trey Thompson

Andrew Jackson got a win over Chesterfield this past week and, as I told you in the preseason, this team is primed to be one of the better teams in lower state 2A playorrs. They got another 200+ yards rushing game out of RB Trey Thompson. They play a Central team that is 1-1 in region play with a win over Buford but lost to Cheraw, who Andrew Jackson destroyed.

Pelion lost to Fox Creek this past week and that is revealing. This team takes on a strong Strom Thurmond team this week and should they lose, which is probable, they will need to win their final two games against Batesburg-Leesville and Silver Bluff to get a playoff spot.

Batesburg Leesville’s Patrick Swygert

Batesburg-Leesville is 0-2 in region play after losing to Silver Bluff this past week. This team is in a must win situation this week against Fox Creek. They need two of their last three to get a playoff spot and next up will be Pelion and Saluda.

Keenan is 2-1 in region play after beating a bad Columbia team and this week will take on an Eau Claire team that they should beat. Keenan is going to play themselves into a playoff spot with a win here and another one next week against Mid Carolina.

Newberry is 2-1 in region play after a win over Mid Carolina last week. They take on Gray Collegiate this week and honestly, I think they go 1-2 in these last three games. That will give them a 3-3 mark in region and put them in contention for a playoff spot.

Columbia is 1-3 in region play and lost to Keenan last week. They take on Fairfield Central this coming week and finish with Newberry. I think they finish 1-5 in region play.

Mid Carolina lost to Newberry this past week and will be idle this week. They are 1-3 in region play and are idle this week. They will see Keenan next week and finish with Eau Claire in two weeks. I’m thinking they will finish 2-4 in regin play.

Eau Claire was idle this past week and will take on Keenan this week. They are 0-3 in region play and I feel they will go 0-3 in these last three games finishing winless in region play.

North Central is still looking for a win but but are not going to find it.This team is 0-7 and 0-2 in region and will take on Cheraw this week after losing to Buford last week. They have Andrew Jackson next week and end with Central and I don’t see them winning any of those games.
