The Class 5A beings region play this week and every game counts from here out.
Dutch Fork was off this week and can take this time to figure out what they are going to do offensively in these region battles. They are averaging 32 points per game but their offense is leaving their defense out to dry in a lot of situations and because of that, the defense is giving up 272 yards per game. Offensively they are averaging just 6.9 yards per play, indicating that there are very few explosive plays happening. They have been injured and ineffective in the passing game thus far and will need that dimension in tough games.
Lexington was off this past week and they are travelling to Chapin to take on an Eagles team who lost to AC Flora this past week, giving up a lot of offense to the Falcons. Lexington is more explosive on offense than is AC Flora and that could spell disaster for Chapin. Chapin struggles against the run and that is not good against Lexington with RB Jonah Norris and QB Taiden Mines both effective runners. I do not see this as a close game.
The other Region 4 match up is River Bluff at White Knoll. River Bluff lost to
Dorman this past week and their passing game was effective and could have been more effective except for some dropped balls by receivers. But, when you suddenly try to throw the football in a manner you do not emulate at practice, that is expected. White Knoll is 6-0 for the first time in program history and their defense is playing very good football. Offensively, they are balanced but not flashy. If there is an edge in this game I would say the White Knoll defense gets the edge over the Gators run game. The Timberwolves are allowing just 121 yards rushing per game. That said, if they come out and let quarterback Parker Murray throw again, they may be too much for White Knoll.
Spring Valley is 2-3 and were off this week. This week, they host a a 1-4 Rock Hill team that has been simply dreadful this year on both sides of the football. Now, the fact that they have played two really good football teams in Northwestern and South Pointe does not escape me but giving up 47 points a game and the only win coming over a bad Lower Richland team is not promising. Spring Valley has been equally inept on offense this season, scoring just 67 points in five games, avergaing just 163 yards of total offense per game. I do, however, think their defense is solid and will give them the better chance to win between these two teams.
Blythewood hosts Fort Mill this week after a week off and the Bengals should be the favorted team here. Their offense is clicking with solid play from quarterback Harrison Collins and great play from their running backs. Defensively, they are better than Fort Mill and I think the Jackets will struggle to move the football. The Jackets do not fair well against the run and with the two Bengal backs that will not be a good thing.
Sumter lost to Oceanside Collegiate this past week and they start region play with a road trip to Socastee to take on the 2-3 Braves. Socastee has given up up 50+ pints in the past three weeks and have only beaten two teams, both of which are 1-5 on the season. This Sumter team should be able to move the ball on the Braves and I don’t think they will struggle on defense.
