Midlands Week Five Games of the Week

GILBERT INDIANS AT LEXINGTON WILDCATS

RB Jonah Norris has rushed for more than 800 yards this season.

This is the best match up in the state of South Carolina and has the potential to be one of the best high school games I’ve seen in all my years. Two very strong offensive teams who have played well on the defensive side as of late.

Players to Watch for Gilbert: RB Jaden Allen-Hendrix, RB Alias Graham-Woodberry

Players to Watch for Lexington: RB Jonah Norris, QB Taiden Mines, K/P Tyler Chavis

My Thoughts: Three of the state’s best running backs in one game. I struggled picking this game because it is so evenly matched but I will share how I got to my decision. I believe both of these teams will score points, but I believe Lexington has the potential for more explosive downfield plays on offense. I am concerned about two things with Lexington; one, turnovers and two, penalties, both of which they have committed gratuitously the past several weeks. I have no doubt that Gilbert will move the ball on the Wildcats. I honestly think this game will come down to a late mistake by one team or the other. And the edge in this game could be special teams and with that, I’m going with Tyler Chavis and the Wilcats’ special teams.

My Pick: Lexington

CAMDEN BULLDOGS AT AC FLORA FALCONS

WR/DB Chris Lofton is a dangerous return man

These are two of the most talented teams in the Midlands and neither have any vulnerabilities. Camden lost their last two games on simply poor play and turnovers. The Falcons showed they can be scored on against Brookland-Cayce last week.

Players to Watch for Camden: QB Grayson White, RB Averee Hickman

PLayers to Watch for AC Flora: RB Markell Townsend, WR/Spec Chris Lofton

My Thoughts: Camden is in a “need to recover” mentality right now and I believe QB Grayson White will bouncee back from these past two games. AC Flora’s offense is strong but they have not faced an attacking defense like the Bulldogs yet.

My Pick: Camden (I just don’t think they lose three in a row)

CHAPIN EAGLES AT BROOKLAND-CAYCE BEARCATS

DB Jadyn Johnson

Since losing their opener to Irmo, Chapin has gone 3-0, though it wasn’t exactly a murderer’s row of competition. Brookland-Cayce schedule the toughest schedule of any 3A team in the Midlands, dropping match ups to powers Byrnes and Northwestern on thr road and then losing a shoot out last week to AC Flora.

Players to Watch for Chapin: QB Brady Albro, RB Nolan Beerman

Players to Watch for Brookland-Cayce: QB Tanner Staton, DB Jayden Johnson,

My Thoughts: This is a game that a program like Chapin should win. But the truth is, they have not been impressive in their interior line this season and are untested in any of their games, really. Brookland-Cayce is battle tested. They just allowed 70 points to Flora last week so the defense needs to tighten up but I believe this is a good match up.

My Pick: Brookland-Cayce at home.

SPRING VALLEY VIKINGSAT RICHLAND NORTHEAST CAVALIERS

QB Will Wilson will challenge the Vikings defense

The Vikings of Spring Valley are in desperate need of a win but they will need to change something on offense. The past two weeks have seen little to no offensive production and they barely have 400 yards of total offense on the season. Richland Northeast has underachieved, in my opinion. They have the potential to be a dangerous offensive team but have lacked explosiveness.

Players to Watch for Spring Valley: LB David Wilson, DB Devan Crumpton

Players to Watch for Richland Northeast: QB Will Wilson, DB Myles Pratt

My Thoughts: Neither team has been impressive on offense but the Vikings have shown some physicality on the defensive side of the football; I like their linebackers and their defensive backs and I think defense wins this football game.

My Pick: Spring Valley
