Week four of the 2022 season is upon us and here are my games of the week for this week.
AC Flora Falcons at Brookland-Cayce Bearcats
The Falcons of AC Flora are 2-0 and have a week’s rest behind them as they face off with Brookland-Cayce on the road. The Bearcats are 1-2, with two poundings at the hands of Byrnes in Week one and Northwestern this past week. Their only win was over rival Airport. The Falcons have two wins, one over a good Greenwood team and a blow out win over rival Dreher.
Players to Watch for AC Flora: WR Chris Lofton, RB Markell Townsend, QB Carew Bates
Players to Watch for Brookland-Cayce: QB Tanner Staton, SB Naahzekiel Mays, DL Traquan Singleton
My thoughts: This AC Flora team is good in every phase of the game. WR Chris Lofton may be the most dangerous return guy in the state so the Bearcats may want to kick away from him. The Bearcats are as bi-polar as they come; when they play well, they are very good but other times look completely chaotic. I just don’t think the Bearcats match up well with the Falcons man-on-man.
My Pick: AC Flora
Blythewood Bengals at Lexington Wildcats
The Bengals of Blythewood are 2-1 and should probably be 3-0. They are led by a strong defense and two very good running backs. The Wildcats are 2-1 and offensively have more explosive plays than any other offense in the Midlands. Their defense has played suspect, however, but they are coming off of a better defensive performance against Stratford.
Players to Watch for Blythewood: DL Edward Robinson (has 10 sacks), RB Kinson Holland, RB DeAndre Williams
Players to Watch for Lexington: LB Christian Sexton (love his motor), QB Taiden Mines, WR Jerrod Mewborn, WR Kamadi Maxwell
My thoughts: I really believe that Lexington is the better team here in a man-man matchup. I do feel like the Bengals defensive front can pose a threat to the Lexington backfield so trench warfare is key in this game.
My pick: Lexington
Lugoff-Elgin Demons at Airport Eagles
No, this is not exactly a hot ticket with two 1-2 struggling teams facing off, but I like what I’ve seen this past week out of these teams. Lugoff-Elgin suddenly has a threat to move the football, as do the Eagles. This is going to be a good football game, regardless of what their records are coming into it.
Players to Watch for Lugoff-Elgin: RB Sky Harter (no longer a sleeper), LB KD Outten, LB Chandler Rush
Players to Watch for Airport: WR Apollos Cook; RB Marcus Dwyer, DB Jordan Mimms
My thoughts: This is a good match up for these two teams. I think that Lugoff-Elgin has found a true weapon in RB Sky Harter but Airport has the more dynamic offensive players.
My Pick: Airport in a close game
Ridge View Blazers at Spring Valley Vikings
The Blazers found a little bit of their offense last week but will face off with a Vikings’ team who have a very tough defense. They are fast and aggressive on that side of hte football.
Players to Watch for Ridge View: LB/DE Joshua Saddler, LB Myles Brown, WR Zion Agnew, QB Donalld Tomlin
Players to Watch for Spring Valley: LB David Wilson, LB Jonas Wilson, DB Jordan Chestnut
My thoughts: The Vikings have really struggled on offense this season, barely with 400 yards in three games. The Blazers defense has played very well in each game and are getting better.
My Pick: Ridge View
River Bluff Gators at South Aiken Thoroughbreds
The Gators of River Bluff are 3-0 and riding an offense that can score big and a defense that has proven to be stronger than I anticipated them being. They are facing the most dangerous quarterback they will see this season in South Aiken’s Terrance Smith. The T’Breds may be the best 1-2 football team in the state.
Players to Watch for South Aiken: QB Terrance Smith (worth the price of admission)
Players to Watch for River Bluff: QB Parker Murray, RB Cooper Johns, LB Conner Clamp, LB Kameron Woodruff
My thoughts: River Bluff QB Caleb Murray is very efficient and the ground game they run is difficult to defend. If they target WR Stephen Collier more, they become even more dangerous. South Aiken’s Terrance Smith is a threat to score from anywhere on the field. If the defense give him the smallest seam and allows him to stick his foot in the ground and get through the line without hands on him, he is gone and no one on River Bluff can catch him.
My Pick: Gambling on River Bluff and a good defensive game plan.
