The Class 1A is not deep in strong teams but there are some leaders that made statements in week one. CA Johnson got a 22-6 win over rival Columbia and did it with strong individual performances from RB Dawan Rice (101 yds/2TDs) and LB Terrell Hopkins (11 solo tackles/2 TFL/1 sac). I think they will be competing for their region crown this season with an improved McBee team.
Calhoun County got a good win over Cross this past week. They could very well be the team to beat in their region, as they are a little more seasoned and explosive than the rest of their region. They were unbeaten in region play last season and I expect that again this year.
Ridge Spring-Monetta lost a lot of talent to graduation and I think they will be competitive but they did not look good in their loss to Augusta Christian last week. I think they are headed towards back to back losses over the next two weeks to Saluda and Batesburg-Leesville, before facing Lewisville in three weeks to have a chance at a W.
Wagener Salley is young but they were impressive against Allendale-Fairfax last week, scoring 28 points and holding AF to just 8. This team plays a lot of guys both ways but they are going to be dangerous when region play begins.
Hunter-Kinard-Tyler lost to a Scott’s Branch team that is not overpowering and this Trojan team, who only won two games last season, may be in for a long year with similar results.
