Richland Northeast head football coach Walt Wilson knows a thing or two about breathing life into dying football programs. And he’s already making his mark on the Cavaliers of RNE, putting a much improved procuct on the field.
“We just needed to show them how to do things the right way,” said Wilson. “Consistently doing things the right way is key. We have the talent. We just need the culture.”
The Cavaliers return twelve starters back that went 3-8 overall. That was three games better than the year before Wilson arrived, when they went winless in six games.
Coming back to lead the offense will be sophomore quarterback Will Wilson (6’1,205), who in just seven games as a freshman, passed for 987 yards and rushed for 855 yards, scoring 13 touchdowns. Seniors joining him will be OL Exavier ISlam (6’3,230), TE Everet Joyner (6’4,230) and junior OL Marquel Moser (6’5,320) and sophomore OL Cameron Brice (6’2, 220). Senior WR Zackery Watkins (6’1,185) gives Wilson a good outside target to go to.
Defensively, the Cavs will see senior LB Jason Taylor (6’1,230) play some defensive end and linebacker, senior Samson Stone (5’10 190), senior defensive end Jai Whitaker (5’10,225), senior DB Jaquan Clark (5’10,170)Avonte Grant (5’10,176) who will also play some wide receeiver on offense, and junior DB Myles Pratt (6’0,180).
“We are learning to do things right,” said Wilson. “Our expectations this season is to make better decisions to help us be in position to win more games in the 4th quarter.”
