The Chapin Eagles were 8-4 in 2021, going 2-2 in Region play and making it to the 2nd round of the State 5A playoffs. If the Eagles are to get into the playoffs again in 2022, it will have to be with a young football team, as the Eagles return just four players on offense who had significant playing time last season.
“We will be young on offense but I like the talent of the young guys we have,” said Chapin Head Coach Justin Gentry. “We have a very good defense, maybe the best defense we’ve had since I’ve been here, so that’s going to be big in hellping get us through some games.”
Returning on the offensive side of the football will be senior offensive linemen Luke Major and Isiah Floyd, joined by sophomore lineman Nathan Gilley. Returning at wide receiver will be senior Zion Wallace. Senior Gavin Tirado will move to running back from defense to helpl out on offense and, if needed, defensive end Max Drag can play tight end or out wide.
Defensively, there are seven starters plus an eighth guy that played a lot last year as a freshman. Senior Max Drag is the leader at defensive end, joined up front by senior defensvie lineman Luke Rankin and junior defensive end Hayden Burris. The Eagles will be strong and veteran at linebacker with seniors Nolan Beerman and Will Van Vollenhoven, along with sophomore Tanner Short. In the secondary, senior Adam Bass and sophomore Clayton Sondgeroth return. Sondgeroth will see time
at wide receiver on offense, as well.
“I like this team we have,” said Genttry. “We have a tough schedule but I think these guys can get the job done.”
