Brookland-Cayce quarterback Tanner Staton (6-1,220) gave his commitment to Elon University today, becoming the first and only quarerback that the Phoenix will sign in the 2023 Class.
“We rode up today and did the commitment and the media stuff and it was awesome,” said Staton. “I’m excited about the opporunity to play for a program that is interested in developing players as men off the field too.”
Staton has built a relationship with Elon offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Drew Folmar through camps this off-season.
“I went to several camps that Coach Folmar was at and finally went to the Elon Camp, too,” said Staton. “He and Coach Trisciani both made me feel like I was the one they wanted and they are n ot signing another quarterback in this class.”
Staton said the early commitment was important also because of the situatino with the Transfer Portal. A lot of high school athletes and coaches have become concerned on how long an offer will be goof for before the colleges go after their needs in the portal.
“That was definitely part of it,” said Staton, “but the biggest factor was Elon felt like home and i really like those coaches. I think I can do big things there.”
Staton is a two year starter for the Bearcats who had 2963 yards passing, 663 rushing yards, 22 passing TD/ 6 rushing TDs in his junior season. He is also a standout in the Bearcats’ baseball program.
