The commitments continued to roll in for USC and Clemson last week, especially the Gamecocks as Shane Beamer sent out eight commitment alerts since last Sunday, and six prospects with public with commitments. The Tigers added more commitments from prospects who were in for the June 3rd official visit weekend.
Here’s the current list of USC commitments:
Judge Collier CB 6-1 190 Legion Collegiate
Trovon Baugh OT 6-4 315 Atlanta
Zabhari Sandy SAF 6-1 204 Washington, DC
Cameron Upshaw SAF 6-3 175 Perry, FL
Jalon Kilgore SAF 6-2 196 Eatonton, GA
Connor Cox TE 6-6 227 Jacksonville
Kamron Sandlin TE 6-4 210 Anniston, AL
Kelton Henderson WR 5-11 175 Lehigh Acres, FL
As for their most recent commitments….
Upshaw picked the Gamecocks over Florida State, Arkansas, Nebraska and Maryland. “The love they showed to my family, it’s about me, but I wanted my family to feel comfortable with me going to a school. I didn’t want to go somewhere and they be worried about me, or not sure about the program or the school. So, when they showed my family the amount of love they showed them, and my momma fell in love with it, I’m like, I’ve got to come home now. The way South Carolina works, they don’t have people playing just one position. I get to learn corner, safety and nickel. Coach (Torrian) Gray said he’s going to start me out at the field safety position and depending on how well I run when I get there, he could see me playing nickel or boundary or corner.”
Cox made several unofficial visits to USC prior to his official visit. Some of his other offers were Minnesota, Maryland, West Virginia, Texas, Vanderbilt and Louisville. Cox played in five games last season and caught 7 passes for 148 yards.
Henderson is listed as an ATH in recruiting circles but was recruited by USC as a receiver. He scored six touchdowns last season and had 10 catches for 222 yards. He also had 20 tackles and 1 interception. Henderson also has an official visit scheduled with Michigan for June 24th. Some of nis other offers were Auburn, Texas, Kentucky, Mississippi State, Penn State and Georgia.
Kilgore chose the Gamecocks from a short list that he listed as Clemson, Oklahoma, Michigan and Tennessee Tech. Kilgore took his official visit to USC a week after visiting Oklahoma. He also visited both schools for their spring games. The Gamecocks were one of the first schools to recruit him with sincere interest. Beamer and secondary coach Torrian Gray never relented in their pursuit and that paid off for them in the end. “They just didn’t fall off in their recruitment, they just didn’t offer and forget about me,” Kilgore said after his announcement. “They stuck with me through the entire process from January until now. Coach Beamer told me he had a plan, and I was seeing that plan throughout the whole season. I was seeing that plan through the recruiting process. I have my faith in Coach Beamer and Coach Gray and I believe we can have a really big impact in the SEC.” Last season Kilgore was in on 88 tackles with 8 pass break ups and 4 forced fumbles. He also played receiver and caught 37 passes for 921 yards and 11 touchdowns.
Earlier this month Collier performed at one of Shane Beamer’s camps and left with an offer. It was just a matter of time before he followed the likes of Rick Sanford, Jadaveon Clowney and Stephon Gilmore from South Carolina’s high school football hotspot to the Capital City. “I went out there in one-on-ones and covered some of the top guys they had out there at receiver and got a lot of reps. I did well in the drills. I had great measurables in the 40-time and broad jump,” Collier said after his camp outing earning personal accolades from Beamer and secondary coach Torrian Gray. . “I’ve got range, I’m long, I performed well and have good ball-skills. They said some of my best football is yet to come, so they like my potential and what I have to offer.” USC was the first major offer for Collier and he later picked one up from Boston College. He also had offers from Air Force, Navy and Wofford. Collier is a multi-position athlete in high school. Last season he had 26 tackles and broke up three passes on defense.
Sandlin plays quarterback for his high school, but he committed to USC Saturday night with the idea of playing the hybrid tight end position that will get the ball in his hands a variety of ways. Sandlin made an unofficial visit to USC Saturday. The Gamecocks offered Sandlin in May and proceeded to lay out a plan for him to make him a ball hog in their offense. Sandlin said Saturday night that was part of the reason he committed to Shane Beamer. “It was the atmosphere and the way he said they are going to use me,” Sandlin said. “It just felt like home as soon as I stepped on campus. They plan to use me just like Jaheim Bell. They told me I’d be touching the ball a lot, and I Iove to hear that. As long as the ball is in my hands, I love that. And I love how he’s turning everything around and making it a better place.” Sandlin said he’s not yet scheduled his official visit with the Gamecocks, and this commitment does shut down his recruiting. He also had offers from Mississippi State, Kentucky, UAB, Western Kentucky, Georgia State, Austin Peay and Samford. Last season Sandlin passed for 1851 yards and 21 touchdowns and rushed for 927 yards and 15 touchdowns.
Here’s the current list of Clemson commitments:
Avieon Terrell CB 6-0 170 Atlanta
Branden Strozier CB 6-2 175 Alpharetta, GA
David Ojiegbe DE 6-3 235 Washington, DC
Victor Burley DT 6-4 278 Warner Robins, GA
Jamal Anderson LB 6-4 195 Hoschton, GA
Dee Crayton LB 6-2 215 Alpharetta, GA
MIan Reed OT 6-5 310 Austin, TX
Christopher Vizzina QB 6-4 207 Birmingham
Kylen Webb SAF 6-1 180 Sarasota, FL
Olsen Henry TE 6-4 210 Naples, FL
Markus Dixon TE 6-5 230 Warminster, PA
Noble Johnson WR 6-3 205 Rockwall, TX
As for their most recent commitments…
Anderson made his official visit to Clemson over the June 3rd weekend. He then took an official visit to Utah, his father’s alma mater. Penn State and Michigan State were the other two teams in his final four. His offer list also included Southern Cal, Boston College, Missouri, Nebraska, Virginia Tech, Kansas and Duke. Last season Anderson was in on 78 tackles with 7 tackles for loss, 4 sacks, 5 pass deflections and 2 interceptions.
Dixon made his official visit on June 3rd, and he chose Clemson over Oregon, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Cincinnati and Miami. Dixon said Clemson tight ends coach Kyle Richardson views him as a stretch the field type of tight end, similar to one the Tigers had in Jordan Leggett. “He loves the fact I’m an athletic tight end. I can split out and just kill the SAM linebackers and pretty much any safety or anybody that wants to cover me,” Dixon said. “He loves my frame and pretty much loves my game.”
Burley chose the Tigers over Tennessee and Georgia. He has visited Clemson unofficially and he made official visits to Tennessee and Michigan State. He cancelled a planned official visit to Georgia for last weekend. “The Clemson structure they have there is very similar to what we have here at Warner Robins,” Burley said in making his announcement on CBS Sports HQ. “Just the focus on the player and the person development there drew me in too.” Burley added that Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney has set the bar high for him for when he arrives there. “He was just saying that you can play off the bat when you get here and be dominant and help us win games,” Burley said. “I just bought into it. You can expect a hard-working player, versatile, physical and a team player, too. Whatever the team needs me to do I’ll do it.” Burley will take his official visit to Clemson during the football season.
Crayton went with Clemson over Auburn, Missouri, Penn State and UCF. The commitment culminates a long fascination with Clemson football by Crayton. He was first exposed to Dabo Swinney’s program as a youth attending summer camps. He liked what he saw then, and as he grew older, he grew to love the program to the point he wanted to join the effort. “It’s just the culture they bring and the stability of the coaching staff,” Crayton said last month. “Everything is for the benefit of the players with the facilities as well.” Crayton added that Clemson seems him as an excellent fit for his defense and likes what he can bring to the position. “My athleticism, my play recognition, my speed, my ability to play sideline to sideline, my versatility to play in space and play pass coverage,” Crayton said. “My blitzing skills, me timing the blitz from different parts of the line from the A gap to the C gap, both inside and outside. Being a leader with my actions and vocally. That’s a big thing I pride myself on, being a leader of the defense. That’s a few things that he’s mentioned.” Crayton last season totaled 91 tackles with 4 sacks in 10 games according to MaxPreps.
Clemson Tuesday lost the first player to commit to their 2023 recruiting class. WR Nathanial “RayRay” Joseph (5-8 170) of Miami announced a decommitment from the Tigers. In his post Joseph said after conferring with his family, the decision was made to reopen his recruiting. He also added the following: “This was a hard decision for me to make, but some things took place that me and my family didn’t like, so I will be reopening my recruitment.” Joseph committed to Clemson in September of 2021 choosing them over Florida, Florida State and Texas A&M. He then went on to have a season of 1400 all-purpose yards and 14 touchdowns. Miami is expected to be a major player for Joseph now with the push to keep him home to play for the Hurricanes.
OT Oluwatosin Babalade (6-5 296) of Hyattsville, MD said his official visit with the Gamecocks June 10th put them at the top of his list at this point. “That definitely put them at number one. They definitely showed out to me. We’ll see how things go from here. It was really about the family part. There’s a lot of schools that have the family part, but I felt it in the room with them. I just felt it the whole time. And the players, I just had whole conversations with them, and it was great.” Babalade has also visited North Carolina. This past weekend he was at Ohio State and he will go to Rutgers June 20th and Maryland June 24th. Babalade said he wants to make his decision at the end of this month or in the first week of July.
WR Carmelo Taylor (6-0 170) of Roanoke, VA made his first official visit of the month to USC the June 10th weekend arriving a day after an unofficial visit to Virginia Tech. He made an official visit to Blacksburg this past weekend and will take one to Penn State June 24th. He doesn’t plan to make a decision until sometime during his season. Taylor said what impressed him most on the visit to USC was the family feel of the entire organization: “It was amazing. It was absolutely amazing. It was like a brotherhood. Being in South Carolina made it feel like it was a family down there. The whole football team was like a family. Nobody was arguing. Nobody got into a fight. Everybody was together. It was like they had a type of bond with each other.” As for what he heard from Shane Beamer and receivers coach Justin Stepp, Taylor said he got nothing but encouragement from the two. “I picked up a lot of things from two great coaches. I am truly honored to be able to sit here and say that. It’s just amazing that I was able to be in the presence of two coaches like them.”
QB Dylan Lonergan (6-2 215) of Snellville, GA has made several recruiting visits to USC. He made his final one for his official visit earlier this month. Lonergan has grown close to Beamer and offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Marcus Satterfield through the recruiting process, and he and his family got more of that family feeling from Beamer and Satterfield. “I think it was very positive,” Dylan’s father Dan Lonergan said. “Coach Beamer and Coach Satterfield, the staff did a great job. It was a really good group of kids they brought in. Obviously, they’ve been pretty successful with a few commitments already that I saw. I thought they did a great job, rolled out the red carpet for the group. I know Dylan really enjoyed the experience. He’s been around the staff a lot, but he got an opportunity to really get to know some of the other recruits, and also his player-host was Braden Davis, so he got to meet a number of the players as well.” Dan Lonergan said he and his son did not go into the official visit looking to turn over new rocks of insight and information on the program. They could wright a book about what Beamer has done there, and what he plans to do in the future with his son. The official visit was more about confirming everything they had learned about the Gamecocks. “I think it was just reaffirmation of what we already knew, and more of an opportunity to meet recruits and existing players,” Dan Lonergan said. “That was kind of the biggest take away from the weekend. In terms of setting a date (July 5th announcement), he had intended to do it late June, early July. We had talked about that for the last month, and he just thought it would be good to put a date to it. It just happens to be his uncle’s birthday, so I thought that was a cool date for him.” The final official visit to Stanford is this weekend. The decision is down to USC, Stanford and Alabama. Lonergan has set July 5th for his commitment announcement.
2024 QB Dante Reno (6-1 215) of the Loomis Chaffee School in Connecticut is one of the two top quarterback targets USC head coach for Shane Beamer and quarterbacks coach Marcus Satterfield for the next recruiting season. Reno spent three days in Columbia earlier this month visiting with Beamer, Satterfield and the players and got the complete picture on what’s happening in Columbia. “I got to hang around with a bunch of the players. We were there for two-and-a-half days, so I got to hang around with them for a long time, and be with Coach Satterfield and Coach Beamer,” Reno said. “I just got a feel for the whole team again. This time it kind of came back down to being around the guys. I hung out with Luke Doty for a night. I stayed with him and his roommate Marshawn (Lloyd). It was really good, really beneficial for me.” Reno has developed a tight bond with Satterfield, and a major reason he is so focused on USC as a possible landing spot is the offense Satterfield deploys. “Marcus is going to run an NFL style offense, and it’s going to prepare me for the NFL and all the verbiage that they use in their pass game,” Reno said. “Being around (quarterback) Spencer (Rattler) again, being able to learn from him and see what he does on the field and the film room too, it was really helpful for me and my family.” Rattler is one of the most talked about quarterbacks in the college game, and the nation will be watching this season to see if he excels with the Gamecocks, and they with him. Reno said being around Rattler last week was a great experience. “He’s a first-class guy,” Reno said. “He’s really into his craft and he goes through a lot of the little things that he either did well or didn’t do well. I think that’s what separates him from a bunch of quarterbacks is the way that he carries himself both in the film room and in the meeting room. Even when he’s eating lunch with the players, he’ll start joking around. They have a really good culture there. I think he’s going to have a really good year and I think it’s going to be a fun time in Columbia.” He also has been to Clemson, Florida, Virginia, Georgia and NC State and is returning to USC this weekend for a recruits’ cookout. Some of his other offers include Cincinnati, West Virginia, Connecticut, Iowa, Minnesota, Ole Miss, Houston, Arizona, Syracuse and Louisville. There’s been reporting that Reno was considering reclassifying for the 2023 class, but he said that is not in his plans at this point. “As of right now, I’m staying in the ’24 class,” Reno said. “Just keep the process going and see where it goes from now. It’s speeding up a lot right now, my process, not just with South Carolina but in general. We’ll see what happens in the next couple of months.” Reno is closing in on his decision and plans to announce something in July or early August. Beamer did put out a commitment alert tweet for a 2024 prospect last week. Last season Reno passed for 2507 yards and 27 touchdowns.
QB Jalen Daniels (6-5 215) of San Diego plans to join USC this season as a PWO. Daniels is friends with Rattler, and they work with the same quarterback coach in Arizona. Daniels played his first two seasons in high school in Arizona. He did receive an offer from Syracuse during his senior season at Lincoln High School. Last season he completed 132 of 209 passes for 2442 yards, 18 touchdowns and 8 interceptions.
OT Markee Anderson (6-5 280) of Dorman planned all four of his official visits for June and a decision in August before the start of his senior season. So far, he is sticking to his plan having checked off officials to Clemson, North Carolina and LSU. Coming up will be USC this weekend. Clemson was the first official visit the opening weekend of the month. The Tigers, with first year offensive line coach Thomas Austin, have made a strong pitch for Anderson, and he saw and heard more of that on the visit. “It was a great experience to be my first OV,” Anderson said. “I got to spend more time with the coaches and really get to know them. Getting around the players and the recruits too, hang out with them too and just chill in a chill environment.” Though a rookie coach at Clemson, Austin knows the program as well as anyone having played there and having worked as an analyst with former line coach Robbie Caldwell. So, Anderson feels Austin’s newness as the line coach is not a negative in any way. “Being a former player, he knows how to get around and stuff like that, how the offensive line there works,” Anderson said. “Him still being new, it really won’t make a big difference because he’s been there really his whole life.” This weekend it’s back to USC where Anderson has been a regular visitor with Beamer and offensive line coach Greg Adkins over the last several months, and the two have kept up their communications. “It’s been the same message. They like how I play, and they can’t wait to get me down,” Anderson said. “Just going to hang out more with the players and see the daily routine of the South Carolina Gamecocks.”
One of the biggest names on the USC recruiting board for the 2023 class is DE Kelby Collins (6-5 250) of Gardendale, AL. The national level recruit has the Gamecocks in his top five along with Alabama, Oklahoma, Florida and Georgia. He made an official visit to Florida on June 3rd and was at USC the next weekend. That was his second visit to Columbia after taking in the spring game in April. Collins said what grabbed his attention on his official visit was the closeness he felt among the coaches and the players and how that spread to him from head coach Shane Beamer on down. “I really felt the love there,” Collins said. “They had four players commit right after their visits, so I feel like hopefully they are doing something different there and he is going to turn the program around. I feel like all the coaches are investing in their players and want them to succeed. Everybody is like family there. Everybody goes to each other’s house. The families are close.” Looking at the Gamecocks from a football standpoint, Collins also saw things he liked, especially in the defensive scheme they run up front. “The defense they run is really similar to what I run in high school,” Collins said. “The position I’d be playing is a true end type, sometimes maybe outside linebacker. That really stood out to me, so it would be easy for me to get to know their defense and possibly start when I first come in since they’re losing a couple of guys.” USC defensive line coach Jimmy Lindsey has been the front man for USC in their recruiting of Collins, and the two are developing a strong relationship. “We talk at least two to three times a week maybe,” said Collins. “I feel like our relationship is real good right now and I feel like he can develop me as a good end guy.” The Gamecocks are playing with the national elite in the Collins recruiting sweepstakes. To become one of those elite programs, Collins is the type of player they need to land. He said their chances to do that were only improved by the weekend visit. “I felt like it definitely made it harder for me to decide now,” Collins said. “I have some great schools in my top five, and it just made it harder for me to decide where I want to go. They were a major factor and it kind of elevated them a little bit.” Collins plans to visit Georgia on June 24th. He has nothing else on the schedule though he may get to Alabama in July. He has been to Alabama unofficially. He has not yet visited Oklahoma. Collins said he wants to make his decision prior to his season.
WR London Humphreys (6-2 195) of CPA HS in Nashville is coming off a 1,100-yard, 14 touchdown performance in his junior campaign and those numbers have caught the eye of USC receivers coach Justin Stepp, and he may have a little help on the recruiting trail inside the Humphreys’ living room. “My mom went there and was a track athlete,” Humphreys said, bragging about the former USC heptathlete. “When it comes to Coach Stepp, he is an awesome guy. Him and Coach (Marcus) Satterfield, they’re very personal. They get to know you and get to know your family. Just see how you’re doing as a person, not just in football, which I think is awesome.” Humphreys is clearly taken by the Gamecocks and likes the comparisons he’s getting from another USC recruit. “The way he was talking to me about it, he just signed Landon Samson out of Texas. He said I’m very similar to him,” Humphreys said. “Athletically, speed wise, jumping wise, I’m just taller. I’m a bigger physically sized receiver and would play an outside receiver type deal. That’s how he kind of compared me. He showed me some of his stuff, what he likes and compared it to my film. Just getting to learn how he likes to coach has been very interesting and enjoyable.” The rising senior hasn’t taken a visit to USC but is looking at an unofficial visit on June 25th for the cookout the Gamecocks are staging. In the meantime, he’s kept a sharp eye on the progress of the Gamecocks under the direction of Shane Beamer. “Coach (Shane) Beamer texted and he’s just checking on me, asking how I’m doing. They (the staff) love to get to know their players and spend time with them outside of just talking about football,” Humphreys said. “The SEC is the hardest conference by far. It’s always hard to just jump in and dominate right away. Just looks on the up-and-up with Coach Beamer there. All good things are coming, I think”. Humphreys visited Virginia officially June 10th and has also visited Alabama. He said he could take a trip over to his hometown school of Vanderbilt, adding that it wouldn’t need to be an official visit because it’s so close. Humphreys, who also has offers from Appalachian State, Air Force, Boston College, Kansas, Charlotte, Liberty, Memphis, Tulane and others says he hopes to wrap up his college choice in the coming months. “Towards the end of summer or very early in the football season, I want to kind of have that decision done and enjoy my senior season,” Humphreys said. “Go through that knowing where I want to go to school and still build that connection and learn more about the school and the plays. That’s what I’m shooting for.” Humphreys is also a track standout and won the state championship as a sophomore in the long jump.
It’s not often USC attracts a prospect from San Diego to a camp, much less a junior college prospect. But a connection within the coaching staff convinced OT Isaiah Jatta (6-6 310) of San Diego and Snow Junior College in Utah to fly cross-country and show Shane Beamer and offensive line coach Greg Adkins what he’s made of. “I had been recruited by Coach Lonnie Teasley (offensive analyst) back in high school when he was at North Carolina Central,” Jatta said. “He told me I’m on evaluation at USC and the camp could tremendously help my recruiting. And it did, I put on a show (Channel 51).” That he did. Jatta was so impressive in his Wednesday camp session he was offered Saturday by Beamer and Adkins at the conclusion of an unofficial visit. “While at the camp, Coach Adkins liked how much of a leader and inspirational person I was to younger campers there,” Jatta said. “A lot of the younger athletes looked up to me and I did help them as well while at the camp. That was something that was noted. As far as a fit, I’m a winner, a leader, and am hungry. So, it would mesh up very well with what they want to accomplish, an SEC championship and winning pedigree.” Jatta said he did not commit to the Gamecocks before leaving, but they are certainly a major player for him now. “I have until December to commit somewhere, but the South Carolina experience was fun,” he said. “I enjoyed my unofficial visit out there. I know it holds a lot of weight because it’s an SEC offer and my first one at that. I am beyond blessed, and most importantly want to thank my god and my family who support me throughout this recruiting process. They are high up on my recruiting for sure, but with so much time for my recruiting, who knows what could happen.” Jatta also holds offers from Nevada-Reno, Fresno State, Kansas, Utah State, Kent State, Idaho State, North Carolina Central and Eastern Michigan. He has also taken an unofficial visit to Kansas. He reports back to Snow College on July 18th.
2024 OT Kam Pringle (6-7 330) of Woodland may be the most sought-after prospect in South Carolina, with both the Tigers and USC heavily involved in his recruitment. Pringle, who was offered by Clemson on June 1st, has an impressive list of suitors that includes USC, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio St., Tennessee, Texas A&M, Virginia and Virginia Tech. Pringle didn’t work out at Clemson’s camp last week and instead spent more time with the coaches, including offensive line coach Thomas Austin. Even a couple of weeks removed, the offer from the Tigers remains fresh on his mind. “It was exciting. It was something I’ve wanted for a long time, since I started the process,” Pringle said. “It’s verification for me that all my hard work is paying off. It was a great feeling. It was a great experience. He (Austin) told my coaches to tell me to call him, so I called him, and I didn’t realize it was about the offer. And if I did, I forgot that June 1 was supposed to be the day things changed. He called me and caught me a little off guard.” What did he want to accomplish this past weekend? “Just feeling out the program,” the Dorchester native stated. “Hanging out with the coaches, going to meetings, just being on campus and feeling out the vibe. I’ve been up there multiple times. I didn’t take a campus tour. I just walked around the facility a little bit. I’ve been up there so many times, I can kind of tell you what’s on campus. So, it’s really just getting familiar with stuff and warming up and getting to know everybody.” Pringle also made a camp stop at USC late last week. After seeing both of the in-state schools again, Pringle said both remain major factors in his recruiting. “They (Clemson) are definitely in my top schools. They’re definitely top ten, if not top five contenders for me right now,” he said. “As long as things keep going the way they’re going, they’re going in the right direction. Clemson definitely has a great shot now and in the future. And South Carolina is, of course, a top three school. They’ve done their part in recruitment and make sure they always kept up with me and make sure that throughout the very complicated process to where they can’t call and they can’t just text me, they still put forth effort into making sure we stay in contact. Pringle will be back on the road later this month with plans to visit Tennessee and Kentucky.
