Realignment proposal passes

Recommended Posts

https://www.thestate.com/sports/high-school/prep-football/article227504224.html

Had read something about this a month prior. Now its official to begin starting with 2020-22. Essentially instead of using the 135-day head count they are now going to use the 45-day count. And instead of using grades 9-12 the HSL will use grades 9-11.

Couple of quick observations. A.) Using 9-11 makes more sense seeing as how those current seniors won't be around anyways. B.) Will be interesting to see if using 45 days versus 135 makes a difference at all. I'm sure some schools have worse attrition rates between the end of Q1 and the end of Q3 than some schools.

Not sure where the cut off will be however, at least the article did not indicate this information.

Thoughts???

Under the new realignment formula here is what 5A MIGHT look like for the 2020-22 cycle. Bare in mind this is using the 45 day count in October, 2018. IF the SCHSL still decides to use the top 48 schools to make up 5A. Currently 5A is at 48 schools and 4A is at 40 schools. See what happens in October, 2019 I guess.

Will be interesting to see the impact the new Catawba Ridge High School in Fort Mill has on Fort MIll and Nation Ford high schools. Article says the school will open with grades 9-11. The HSL said in the article the new school would be in region 3-4A BUT with these new realignment developments what will happen to the 9-11 enrollments for Fort Mill and Nation Ford remains to be seen. Would all 3 schools now be in 4A???

Lucy Beckham High School is set to open in August 2020 essentially taking kids away from the largest school in the state Wando. Not that that will make Wando a 4A school by any means but it does add another a variable to the equation.

There is also rezoning taking place currently in Berkeley County in regards to Cane Bay and Stratford. Both schools are large enough not to have any classification impact it seems.

Eastside High School this past winter received the greatest number of "assignment changes" for any high school in the GCSD. 216 assignment requests in total. How many of those are already attending Eastside from outside their geocode it does not indicate. Does not necessarily mean 216 NEW assignment requests. But come October 2019 Eastside could be in the mix to be a 5A school.

Bumping Eastside up to the largest classification would certainly make 5A much more interesting .... However 4A would become much less interesting in many ways.

Only Avg,

IMO quite the contrary. 4A could lose Eastside but gain Chapin back along with gaining Indian Land and Gilbert. Essentially losing 1 DOMINANT program and replacing it with 3 VERY good / competitive teams.

Well color me an idiot for not looking at all of the numbers ... I don't know what to say, this hasn't happened to me since I last asked Maholtz if he was going to eat his other hotdog.

😣

Union County and May River are also solid programs that would move up

Not sure how much would be left in 3A.  Crescent, West Oak and who in the lower state?? Battery Creek?

Here is the best I can figure 3A would look like. Remember though these classifications are in keeping with the notion that the SCHSL would keep 48 schools in 5A, 40 schools in 4A and 44 schools in 3A. The initial proposal that I saw had something like 43 schools in each. So 43 in 5A, 43 in 4A ad 43 in 3A. All of that remains to be seen it sounds however.
