The Saluda Tigers got a run away win with little fight in a 42-0 blowout of Pelion last week. Freshman running back Brayden Williams scored on Saluda’s first offensive play of the game and went on to rush for 126 yards and two scores in the win. This team is balanced and is dangerous throught he air and the ground. This week, they face a 4-2 Strom Thurmond team in region play.
Fairfield Central is 4-2 and got their second region win with a 41-20 win over Mid Carolina. The Griffins continue to be a dangerous passing team with their fleet of wide receivers and freshman quarterback Cameron McMillon. This week is the showdown with Gray Collegiate and, while I know there are still a few weeks left in the season, this is for the region, as the winner of this game will continue unscathed in region play.
Gray Collegiate dominated a Columbia team that is just bad and barely has enough players to get through this season. The JV team, who did not have a game last week, dressed and played after the first quarter in this game. This week, Gray will need the starters as they face off with a good Faifield Central team. Both of these defenses will be tested this week but this Gray team is beginning to peak and this is going to be a good time for them to do so.
Andrew Jackson got a good win this past week over a down Cheraw team and got a 250+ yards performance out of junior running back Trey Thompson, who is leading the entire Midlands in rushing. I told you guys weeks ago that this AJ team was one of the best in 2A and I believe it. This week, they face off with a 3-2 Chesterfield team that they should be able to beat. I believe the final regular season game against Buford will determine this region winner.
The Pelion Panthers tood it on the chin from 2A’s top team, Saluda last week. This week, the Panthers take on a 1-5 Fox Creek team that should give them their first region win. Beyond that, the schedule is not easier as they face Strom Thurmond next week, ‘
Batesburg-Leesville got pounded in a 40-0 blanking at the hands of Strom Thurmond this past week showed very little offense in the loss. This team has struggled at times this year and this week will take on a 2-4 Silver Bluff team that is better than their record.
Keenan was off this past week and will face off with Columbia in region play this week. I don’t think the Raiders will have trouble with the Caps in this match up and the Keenan offense should roll. The Raiders have a good chance at finishing their last four games 3-1 which would make them 4-2 in region play with a third place finish.
Mid Carolina lost to Fairfield Central this past week but managed 20 points on the Griffins defense. This Rebel team has talent and should be competing for the third spot in the region. This week, they take on a 1-5 Newberry team and it will probably be a competitive game. Both teams needs a win to stay in playoff contention.
Columbia, I talked about in my Week Seven takeaways. This program has eroded in terms of participation at no fault of the staff. They have a couple of good football playerss on this team but of the 25 or so players they have, only two or three are guys who can make a difference for them. I feel bad for this program and would love to see them get this program built back close to the days of Coach Charlie Mac and Kemper Amick. This week, they take on a Keenan team that will probably be too much for them to overcome.
Newberry, as mentioned is 1-5 and not showing a lot of promise on defense. They take on Mid Carolina this week and it could be a competive game for the Bulldogs. I like their quarterback Bryce Satterwhite and they have a decent running game but defensively are vulnerable.
The Eau Claire Shamrocks were blanked by Newberry last week, 56-0. They are winless this season and will have a bye week to try to get some game planning to prevent a winless season.
North Central lost to Chesterfield last week and honestly, Chesterfield is not that good. This week, they take on a very tough Buford team who i believe will be playing for the region crown in their final regular season game against Andrew Jackson. This one will not be pretty for North Central.
