Dutch Fork showed what I’ve been saying all season – they are vulnerable. They generated just 121 yards of offense on 52 plays and were it not for a defensive score on a pic6 by Chandler Perry, they would have been shut out. They left their defense out on their own and gave up 367 yards and 26 points. Granted, they won’t see a defense in SC like they saw with this St Francis team, but they MUST get healthy to get through the 5A playoffs.
The Saluda Tigers knocked off Gilbert and the vulnerability Gilbert showed against Lexington haunted them against this Tigers team. Saluda has to be the best 2A team in the state and right now, I don’t see anyone challenging that.
River Bluff lost by 16 to Dorman and I predicted a two score loss so was close. But the Gators showed me they can be a dangerous football team by FINALLY throwing the football. 37 of their 79 offensive plays were passes and sophomore QB Parker Murray completed 81% of his passes and threw for 229 yards and 2 scores. If not for some drops by his receivers, he’s have had 300+ yards. This willingness to throw the football along with their strong ground game makes them a contender in their region.
White Knoll continues to roll with strong defense and an offense that rolls. They put up 350+ on offense but more impressively held Lancaster to 128 total yards. This defense is tough and makes them a region contender.
I took in the Irmo @ Airport game with my buddy, legendary Coach Phil Williams. Let me just say that I love Aaron Brand and Andre Cook. Both are great men and coaches. But this was the tale of two cities and Irmo is on the rise and Airport is struggling to dig out of the hole Cook found them in. Irmo QB AJ Brand was back after three weeks out due to injury and he was fire! 318 yards passing and 4 touchdowns and a standout performance from RB Erick Tucker with 252 total yards and 2 scores. This team looked better than they’ve looked all season. Airport is going to struggle in region play.
The SCISA ranks in Columbia is a battle and Ben Lippen ran over Cardinal Newman in a battle between two pretty good offensive teams. Hammond is still the team to beat but these games are competitive
Speaking of SCISA, I have to mention Thomas Sumter athlete Gatlin Kimbro. If you have been reading my stuff, you know this kid never leaves the field. Well, he had another amazing performance last night. He has 20 rushes for 131 yards and 2 TDs, 1 reception for 10 yards, a 25 yard FG, 2 punts for. 40 yards average, 9 tackles and a sack on defense AND he threw the game winning touchdown pass.
