Baxter’s Blitz: Takeaways from Week Two

Chandler Perry

Dutch Fork surprised me, struggling with a Spartanburg team that has not looked strong defensively. Either Spartanburg is better than I originally thought, or Dutch Fork truly is mortal this season. Jarvis Green continues to roll, but the passing offense is non existent. Defensively, they look strong and their linebackers and secondary is playing great. That linebacker group of Chandler Perry, Jaylin Hinton, John Buetow and Terrance Wells deserves recognition. They account Ted for 22 tackles, a sack and 3 TFL against Spartanburg.

Kamadi Maxwell

Lexington’s offense is every bit as explosive as I said it would be in preseason. QB Taiden Mines has over 500 yards in two games, WRs Kamadi Maxwell, Jerrod Mewborn and Brandon Cromer are weapons and RB Jonah Norris is one of the best in the Midlands. Defensively, they need to tighten up against the run. They’ve struggled two weeks in a row against running quarterbacks in zone reads.

Spring Valley continues with a lethargic offense and they have to remedy that. They have two good backs and three athletes who have lethal speed. They need to figure out how to get the ball in their hands in space. More importantly,. they need to cut down on mistakes. Three turnovers, including two off of special teams that resulted in touchdowns for White Knoll did the Vikings in.

Biggest takeaway here is the Ridge View offense not living up to its expectations. This was an element of the team that was hyped up big time in the off season on the bird app, but this far in the season they’ve been very ordinary. On the other hand, their defense has to be praised because those guys are playing their tails off to cover for the offensive lethargy.

Camden is still the best 3A team in the Midlands and quarterback Grayson White is a two-dimensional weapon running and passing. This defense is nasty and may just get them back to the state game.

Jaden Allen-Hendrix

Gilbert’s running backs are a force to be reckoned with. Junior Jaden Allen-Hendrix is an absolute animal running the football and Alias Graham-Woodberry has lethal speed and one gear. The two combined for 231 yards on just 19 touches against Batesburg-Leesville.

So, Andrew Jackson is a good football team. They had a strong Fairfield Central team on the ropes for a good portion of the game. Look for this team to compete for their region.

Fairfield Central’s Donovan Watkins

Fairfield Central showed character being able to play from behind as they did and recover from three early turnovers that resulted in points for AJ. This Griffin team is clearly the best Midlands 2A team and they are going to get better as the season goes on.

Gray Collegiate is having trouble finishing this season. They had Crestwood on the ropes and let them come back and put them away in the second half. The wheels came off the defense and it was not pretty. You have to have eleven hats to the ball and get there with a mean-on; right now, the War Eagles lack that.
