Midlands Prospect Watch

As the season begins to roll, I will start bringing you the Midlands Prospect Watch (formerly Five on the Rise), where I will highlight players and teams who deserve recognition. My mission for SCVarsity, from day one 25 years agao, has been and shall continue to be to promote the athletes, not just the ones with stars by their names.

Donovan Watkins, DB/WR, 5’10, 170, Fairfield Central (Class of 2023)

Donovan Watkins

Watkins is one of the most gifted athletes in the Midlands, playing both sides of the ball for the Griffins. He had 17 tackles last season 4 deflections and 2 interceptions. He is a legit 4.5 guy and is strong in coverage, rarely getting out of phase. He has offers from North Greenville and Anderson already, but I believe this cat can play at a bigger school. In week one, he had three tackles and an interception.

Kamadi Maxwell, WR, 5’11,170, Lexington (Class of 2023)

WR Kamadi Maxwell

Maxwell is a two-sport star, playing point guard for the Wildcats basketball team, as well. He has strong skills as a wide receiver, running crisp routes and has soft hands. He’s strong in transition and explodes out of his cuts. He has the ability to take a hit in the air and hold onto the ball. I feel like he’s one of the more under rated receivers in the Midlands. Last week against a good West Florence team, he had more than 200 yards receiving and leads the Midlands in receiving yards.

Ty Grier, WR, 5’9, 170, Fairfield Central (Class of 2025)

Ty Grier

Grier is a sophomore but has been a an impactful player this off season and preseason. Last week, he had 7 receptions for 168 yards and two touchdowns in win over Carvers Bay. He is explosive in his routes and not easy to bring down. He has been a running back since playing football but was moved to the slot and has adapted nicely. Soft hands, speed, strength…this kid is going to be special over the next three seasons for the Griffins.

KD Outten, LB, 6’0, 205, Lugoff-Elgin (Class of 2024)

KD Outten

Outten has played both sides of the ball for the Demons but it is at linebacker that I believe he has the longest road ahead of him. he’s physical and a downhll defender who brings all of his pads to the party when he tackles. This past week, against River Bluff, he racked up ten tackles, 1 TFL, 1 FF and a pass break up. He plays sidelines to sidelines and has good range with his speed. Recruiters need to take notice.

Cooper Johns, RB, 5’10, 190, River Bluff (Class of 2023)

Cooper Johns

Johns has looked strong coming off of an injury from last season. As a junior in six games, Johns went for 788 yards and had a little more than 100 more receiving. This past week against Lugoff-Elgin, he rushed for 113 yards and 3 touchdowns. He’s a hard, North and South runner and fights for the tough yards. He does have the speed to get to the edge and he has soft hands coming out of the backfield. I think this kid would be perfect in the Southern Conference.
