ALL-MIDLANDS SUPER TEN
1 | Dutch Fork Silver Foxes | 1-0 |
The Silver Foxes played to expectations. I said it would be a one score game relying on their defense and it was. They are going to get better as the season goes on bu this is the most beatable I’ve seen them in along time. They need more explosive plays on offense to develop.
2. | AC Flora Falcons | 1-0 |
This could possibly be the best team in the Midlands. They are strong at every position. Their line is dominating and they have very good quarterback play from first year starter Carew Bates. Markel Townsend is a slashing back that is going to get a lot of yards behind that line this season. They truly have to be considetered an early favorite the lower state 4A.
3 | Sumter Gamecocks | |
The Gamecocks looked strong where they always look strong – in the trenches on both sides of the football. If they can get the quarterback play to where it needs to be, this is going to be a very dangerous team this year.
4 | Camden Bulldogs | 1-0 |
These guys tricked me. In preseason scrimmage, I was not impressed with what I saw but in their opener, they flexed the muscles and demonstrated they have not missed a beat since last year’s state runner up performance. QB Grayson White and company moved the ball at will against the Seahawks and their defense was fanstatic. They are the favorite in my book for lower state 3A. |

5 | Gilbert Indians | 0-0 |
The Indians open up next week.
6 | Lexington Wildcats | 0-1 |
The Wildcats lost to a good West Florence team that played for a lower state 4A championship last season. Offensively, they did some very good things. Ground game looked strong and Kamadi Maxwell is as good as any WR in the Midlands. But boy, did they make mistakes. Turnovers, along with some poor defensive play being out of position cost them in the end as the Knights kicked a field goal with under a minute to win it. This team, however, is going to be dangerous by the time region play starts.
7 | Fairfield Central Griffins | 1-0 |
The Griffins destroyed Carvers Bay and did it impressively. 300 + yards from their freshman quarterback and two WRs with more than 125 yds, combining for the 5 touchdowns. This team is way stronger than I anticipated them being and are going to challenge for that top 2A spot in the Midlands.
8 | River Bluff Gators | 1=0 |
I’m not ready to buy playoff tickets but this team is definitely improved and has the ingredients for a strong season. Granted, Lugoff-Elgin is as bad a team as the Gators will see this year, so staying focused and grounded will be important. But they got solid play from their sophmore QB Parker Murray and WR/DB Stephen Collins and the defense played solid.
9 | Ridge View Blazers | 1-0 |
Donald Tomlin played like I thought he would at QB and these WRs didn’t let down. I did expect them to put up more gawdy numers than they did but it’s first week and they were playing a talented defense. This team is only going to get better as the season goes on. Defense stepped up and played very well. |

10 | Irmo Yellow Jackets | 1-0 |
These guys have to find some kind of vertical offensive threat or it could be a tough season. They have the QB piece in place but need a guy or two that can stretch the field and go get a football in the air. |
Just outside:
Spring Valley – I need to see more than 200 yards of offense tobe among the Top Ten tewams in the Midlands. That said, they will do well in their region play as is.
