The Class 4A in the Midlands looks
to be strong and there are some surprises.
Right now, the top 4A teams in the
Midlands has to be AC Flora and Brookland-Cayce. Airport and Westwood are going
to be mentioned in that same breath, as well. After those guys there is a significant
drop off.
REGION 3-4A
We have three Midlands teams in this
region. Westwood, afore mentioned, has the makings of what it takes to be a top
team in the region, as well as the Midlands. But they haven’t shown any offensive
fire power in the first two weeks, dropping a game to Lugoff-Elgin 12-8 and only
scoring one offensive score in the 14-7 win over Blythewood. Their defense has played
lights out, however, and if they can get the offense back to the production it
had last year, they could win this region. Ridgeview is struggling with their
offense and quite frankly, until they get that fixed they are going to struggle
in the class. I think two of the next three are winnable games for them, with
Daniel being the biggest challenge of the three games. They need to win at least
two of those games prior to region play. Richland Northeast will struggle all
season.
REGION 4-4A
AC Flora is the team to beat here.
Behind the running of Matt Pack on offense and what may be the best defense in
the Midlands, this team is poised to run the table this year, at least in region
play. Right now, every other Midlands team in this region is struggling. Dreher
took a big hit from Lexington this week but losing their quarterback last week
has put them in a scramble mode. They will recover this tailspin but it may be
too late before they do. Lower Richland struggled against a Swansea team last
week that was crushed by 2A Gray this week. They lost to Carolina Forest this week,
which was expected, but this team is not playing as well as I anticipated they
would. They have three very tough games coming up and then a week off before
region play starts. Right now, I don’t see a challenger for Flora.
REGION 5-4A
Brookland-Cayce and Airport are the only
Midlands teams in this region with the CSRA teams. I believe that either of
these teams could win this region. Brooland-Cayce beat Airport this week,
35-32, but they will play again at the end of the season and that one will be a
region game. BC has a solid ground attack and Airport may have the best tandem
of running backs in the Midlands and in this region.
