Columbia (SC) The Mr. Football Award in South Carolina goes to the state’s most outstanding senior football player, given by the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association. I know it is just July but I wanted to throw out my top pics for this prestigious award.
Luke Doty, Quarterback, Myrtle Beach High School. This South Carolina committment has been on the radar since first coming to one of my QB1 Camps in the Summer of his 8th grade year. I believe he is one of the top quarterbacks, nationally, in the Class of 2020 and he is a heck of an athlete, with the ability to play as a wide receiver or tight end, which he has done in the past for the Seahawks.
Mason Garcia, Quarterback, Carolina Forest High School. Garcia has all of the tools and is clearly one of the best signal callers in the state. In fact, I’d say he’s one of the top three. He has over a dozen Division I offerson the table right now. The success, or lack there of, his team this season, however, will probably play a part in whether or not he can get this selection.
Tonka Hemingway, Defensive End, Conway. Hemingway is clearly one of the top defensive linemen in the state. He is disruptive to an offense and should put up good numbers this year. Defensive line is not a “sexy pick” for this award and only four defensive guys have won in the history of this award.
Jalin Hyatt, Wide Receiver, Dutch Fork High School. Hyatt, in my opinion, is the most athletic football player in the state of South Carolina and cannot be covered man-to-man by one player. He’s got phenom skills and is going to be a very good collegiate player.
Ty Olenchuk, Quarterback, Dutch Fork High School. Olenchuk wins. Period. He is unbeaten as a starter and will in all probability play for another state title this season. He is committed to Clemson in baseball but got plenty of interest in football, as well. Because of his prowess on the field and the success of the Silver Fox team at his command, Olenchuk has to be a consideration for this award.
